Ghana hosted seven other West African countries for the 8th edition of the "Children of Joy" games in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

The three day tournament, held in Pakro, has been held every year for the past eight years. But because of its generous sponsor, the program has become known as the Remar Games.

This year, participating countries were Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, and Mali.

Cote d'Ivoire had hosted the seven previous editions of the games, but handed the reigns to Ghana this year.

Remar is a worldwide charity from Spain that focuses on inspiring people from disadvantaged backgrounds or who are faced with drug and alcohol problems, aiming to change their circumstances.

George Wiafe, sponsor of Remar Games, said, "My own cousin was into serious alcoholism, now as I speak now, through Remar his life is totally reformed and transformed so I think Remar always need my support and others."

The games in West Africa focus in particular on helping children in the region to become more engaged in sport while mixing with kids from other regions.

Many of those taking part come from poor backgrounds, and some are street children.

Pastor Valentin Koffi Tao, Remar Ghana, said, "The meaning of these games is to explain to these children because most of them are orphans, they are street children, they may be not have parents, no family to support them but through this games, through this festival they can understand that they are not alone; they have fathers and mothers in all the countries."

This year's highlight was an inter-country football match. Enjoying their home-field advantage, Ghana won, with Burkina Faso coming in second. Team players were presented with a trophy and individual medals.

Adults also had a chance to participate and show the kids an example of team work with a game of tug of war. Remar currently operates in 70 countries across Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas.
