As artists from all over the world gathering in Edinburgh, there's art for all tastes in the city. There are big names in the entertainment scene and unknown artists looking to build their careers. And still there is an alternative to the International Art Festival. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe includes theatre, comedy, dance, musicals... most everything you can think of, and some things you can't.

The story of Edinburgh Festival Fringe, or simply "The Fringe", dates back to 1947, when Edinburgh International Festival was just established to celebrate the cultural life of Europeans in the wake of the Second World War. 74 years ago, 8 theatre groups turned up uninvited and staged their shows anyway without being part of the official program. Year after year, as performers followed their example, the Fringe was officially introduced to Edinburgh in 1959.

Although the organizer of the Fringe formalized the existence of the collective performances, published a program, and set up a central box office, they still want to maintain the spirit of what happened in 1947. So, the Fringe organizers are proud to include in the program anyone with a story to tell and a venue willing to host them.

"It's really really great, happy sounds..."

Besides the high artistic standards, Edinburgh Festival Fringe has provided a platform that allowed the careers of many troupes and performers to bloom. Examples include the likes of London Club Theatre Group and famous comedians including Rowan Atkinson, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie. But for art lovers, the concept of the Fringe means an intimate encounter with art in their daily lives. Plus, it's always a decent reason to let their hair down for a while, and enjoy the gathering with local Scots.
