The Polish town of Elk is hosting the fourth International Balloon Festival, entertaining crews from across the world. Over 60 balloon and airship crews took part in the annual competition, putting Elk on the map as the balloon capital of Poland.

Each day two teams were organized to fire up their balloons with hot gas, one in the morning and another in the evening, when the air is cooler and conditions are better for lift. The town's mayor explains just what the event means to the town.

Tomasz Andrukiewicz, Mayor of Elk, said, "This is the biggest balloon event in Central-Eastern Europe, and is being held for the fourth time. There are over 50 balloon crews and four airships coming from Norway, Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and the United Arabic Emirates. It shows the range of the event."

Balloons have developed over the past centuries. Now, they've become more colorful and are made in more inventive guises, like this flying mug of beer.

Therefore, according to the balloonist's theory, it's takes a special breed of person to engage with this kind of sport. It's the romance and beauty of the balloon, and the landscape it glides across that attracts them.

Bernard Banaszuk, Balloonist of Masurian Int'l Balloon Festival, said, "Balloon crews are people who are active and curious about the world. They like to travel and they have a great passion. Those beautiful morning flights, sunrise over the swamps and lakes that we see from the balloons... We take our cameras and we take hundreds of pictures during just one flight. It's romanticism."

The majestic sight of balloons floating gracefully across an early evening sky even gets locals out to enjoy the sight. The 4th Masurian International Balloon Festival packed up on Sunday.
