For those young performers of Peking Opera, the road to stardom can be arduous. The quintessential Chinese performing art boasts a wealth of established artists who've won the unremitting support from its die-hard fans.

So it's a daunting task for the young performers to break out of the pack and earn their own recognition. Given this situation, the first tournament of young Peking Opera performers was held to give these junior hopefuls much-needed exposure.

Organized by the Beijing Peking Opera Theater, the tournament drew 37 young performers from ten troupes across China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Shandong and Taiwan. Since August 8th when the event kicked off, 20 performances have been staged exclusively by these performers.

The performers have been vying for each other in eight categories, classified by the different roles in Peking Opera, such as Old Man, Young Lady and Martial Arts Man.

It turns out that the performances were warmly welcomed by fans with tickets selling out for each performance. Up till now, the total box office income generated by these young performers has reached 450 thousand, or about 66 thousand US dollars. The total audience count amounted to over 10 thousand.
