With just over 300 days to the London Olympic Games, visitors to the UK capital can expect a feast of athletic-themed treats. For many first-time visitors, their appetite for food could be filled by traditional British specialities - like fish and chips, or pie and mash.

Tasting the nation's most famous dish is a must for many tourists.

Here at the Fryer's Delight in central London, another batch of fish is being prepared for the deep fat fryer.

Rockfish, plaice, haddock, cod or skate is first coated in flour before being thoroughly dipped in batter. The coated fish is dropped into the fat fryer - where temperatures reach up to 200 degrees Celsius.

Fish and chips is usually served in an open bag or even wrapped in used newspapers. A sprinkle of salt and a dash of malt vinegar are usually the only condiments used by most people.

Chips are also fried in the boiling beef dripping. The potatoes are turned until they are golden and crispy on the outside and fluffy and white on the inside.

John Majarhaes, Owner of Fryer's Delight Fish and Chip shop, said, "The best way to serve fish and chips is the old system, like we do. You fry the fish in the beef dripping and also we don't mix it with anything else - we don't do kebabs, we don't do burgers, nothing else, just fish and chips, proper fish and chips."

Fish and chips might be the English favorite but a traditional London fast food is pie and mash - nowhere more so than close to the Olympic site in London's East End.

G. Kelly's pie shop has been serving pie and mash and eels around Bethnal Green since 1915. The shop survived the Blitz bombing raids during World War II and is still run by the same family.

Sue Vening, Owner of G. kelly Pie Shop, said, "Pie and mash is a traditional East End food, you won't get it in that combination anywhere else in the country I don't think. So it's a minced beef pie traditionally with a flaky pastry on the top and a dough at the bottom, almost like a pizza dough at the bottom. It's served with fresh mashed potatoes and a parsley sauce which is colloquially known as liquor."

Visitors to London looking to go all out on a uniquely British and more upmarket dining experience could try booking a table at Rules.

Established in 1798 it is London's oldest restaurant, and has long been the haunt of the literary set from Charles Dickens, HG Wells, and Graham Greene to Evelyn Waugh. It has also hosted Hollywood legends like Charlie Chaplin, Clark Gable and Laurence Olivier.

This traditional restaurant prides itself on British food, sourced from British farmers. Menu specialities include game birds, roe deer and Scottish beef.

So whether visitors opt for the traditional street food of fish and chips, pie and mash, or plump for the traditional dining experience of Rules, London has something for all tastes.
