At New York Fashion Week, Diane von Furstenberg's spring collection, dubbed "Beginnings," seemed to express a sense of renewal. As President of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, her show fell on the 10th anniversary of the nine-eleven terrorist attacks.

The looks of Diane von Furstenberg's collection were fresh and breezy, but not overly frilly or frivolous. This year, the milestone anniversary of the terrorist attacks happened to fall on the usual time slot of von Furstenberg's show.

Diane von Furstenberg said, "I always show on Sundays so every seven years my show will be on September 11th. And this time was the anniversary of ten years but as the president of the CFDA it was not fair for me to change and everybody will have to change. And I also I feel like we have to continue. So that's why I call my show beginnings and it's all about hope and I'm feeling very American today."

Tropical shades of seafoam green, yellow, blue and poppy red offset the crisp white outfits, including the got-it-all-together opening look, a cotton shirt-style wrap dress with a gathered waist.

She found the appropriate balance by handing out American flags to the front row as she took her bow - hand in hand with creative director Yvan Mispelaere - and she pledged to make a donation in each guest's name to the September 11th Families' Association.

For spring, Carolina Herrera embraced a cheerful canary-bird print, used patent leather panels to fake out belts and chose a finale outfit, a beaded top and long folded gazar skirt, both in bright grass green.

Her palette, heavy on the yellow and green, with a bit of blue and red, was inspired by vintage Bakelite bangle bracelets.

Herrera also designed the wedding dress in the upcoming "Twilight" movie for the character Bella, played by Kristen Stewart.
