Northwest China's Gansu Province will soon launch a project to restore Crescent Moon Lake in the city of Dunhuang. Crescent Moon Lake is the top tourist attraction in Dunhuang, also known as the Mogao Grottos.

The project aims to make the lake deeper from its current one meter depth, to over two meters. Engineers will also expand its water surface area by one third.

The local government plans to pump water from nearby reservoirs, while forbidding groundwater mining within a radius of one kilometer around the lake.

The ecologically sustainable plan will make it possible to raise the underground water level through a continuous supply of surface water.

With its reputation as the "Number One Lake in the Desert," Crescent Moon Lake is known for having never dried up in drought or been buried by the desert.
