Eight countries from all over the world took part in a fashion extravaganza named "World Runway" in Singapore last Sunday. The show was organized to help out with Japan's recovery from the March 11th earthquake, tsunami and subsequent nuclear disaster.

Fashion teams from Brazil, France, Italy, Japan, Russia, Singapore, United Kingdom and the United States showed their collections at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Teams were asked to create looks that conveyed their interpretation of World Runway's theme for this year: "Power of Women."

World Runway is the brainchild of fashion director Jake F.R., who is also one of the judges for the event.

Jake F.R. said, "Fashion industry people have strong personalities and have the tendency to fight each other, because everyone thinks, we are number one. But if fashion's people can get along with each other, probably every country can shake hands."

Each team consisted of a stylist as the director and a leader of the team, a makeup and hair artist, and five models.

Four out of eight teams entered the final round of the competition, including France, UK, Japan and Singapore. Team France's stylist, Amina Abdala, said the creativity that accompanies the show's cause helps people move on from the aftereffects of disaster.

Amina Abdala, stylist of Team France, said, "I think that every work of art, if it's for a good cause, is worth it. And I think instead of lamenting, it is better to create, I think it is very positive, it allows us to move on."

At the end of the show, the United Kingdom team was pronounced the winner. Members said their inspiration was edgy British fashion, and they wanted to show off its heritage in the clothes and styling.

Half of the prize money of 80-thousand US dollars will go to the quake relief efforts in northern Japan. Meanwhile, organizers say they expect "World Runway" to continue in Singapore for the next five years.
