Kora's director, Du Jiayi sat down with us for an exclusive story on the process of shooting the film. From shooting at 3000 meters above sea-level to working with non-professional actors, the helmer tells us how he overcame these challenges.

Du Jiayi said, "The top priority for shooting this film was to do a character-driven film, and do it well. Because it's the person that touches me, not the landscape. The process of making a film is a process of overcoming one's own fears. And once you've passed that stage, you'll discover the power of hope.

The shooting process is a dialogue with the sky, the land, and the people. Sky, because it was shot at 3000 meters above sea level. And land, because the unique soil nurtured life there. Plus, you have many non-professional actors that I have to communicate my ideas with. The hardest thing WAS creating this dialogue among the sky, the land and the people.

Unlike the novel, the film presents the director's point of view, but the novel is Xie Wangling's point of view. Also, the novel is one person's work whereas the film represents the team work of hundreds of people. So, we're not trying to change anything. The difference comes from all of these people working together in a given direction. The novel serves as a "crutch" for the film, but that crutch eventually leads the film to a whole new place.

Kora's director, Du Jiayi

Asian films are singular because the emotion, the story and the characters are all unique. I'm proud to be an Asian director. Of course, Hollywood exerts a lot of influence all over the world, but that only encourages others to make better films. If there's only one kind of film, that would not be very interesting."
