A total of 67 contestants from around the world have convened in the capital of China's southwestern Sichuan province for the 51st annual pageant on Sunday. Proud to represent their countries, each contestant held on to their national flags during the parade.

The Miss International Beauty Pageant began in 1960 in Long Beach, California, before moving to Japan where it was held every year from 1972 until last year. Then the event was moved to Chengdu as the pre-event for the annual Shanghai World Expo.

Organizers say the winning criteria is not based on looks alone, but on the ability of the contestant to be "popular-level diplomats" promoting international goodwill.

The current Miss International is Venezuelan beauty Elizabeth Mosquera, who won the title on last year in Chengdu.

Mosquera will be handing over her crown to her successor at the event finale on Sunday night.
