Kunqu Opera thrills German audience

A Kunqu Opera troupe delighted German crowds with their performance of a classic Chinese opera "Palace of Eternal Life"at the Cologne Opera House. The performance is a warm-up for a series of upcoming shows aimed at celebrating the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Germany, and also the Chinese Culture Year 2012 in Germany.

The classic opera "Palace of Eternal Life" was written by Hong Sheng during the Qing Dynasty. The drama is based on the love story of Tang Dynasty Emperor Xuanzong and his consort Yang Yuhuan, one of the Four Beauties of ancient China. It is considered the biggest ever show of Kunqu Opera for an overseas audience.

With the dazzling colors on the stage, the fascinating story and the pleasant music, the ethereal art of Kunqu captured the imagination of opera lovers in Germany. With its history dating back more than 600 years, Kunqu Opera is considered to be the origin for all forms of Chinese opera.
