The 9th Beijing International Theatre Dance Festival is heating up the stages of the capital as winter settles in.

A variety of traditional opera forms are bringing audiences loads of entertainment. Now, let's find out about one style that's seen some recent innovation.

During the 2011 Theatre Dance Festival, a Hebei clapper opera tells a story about a community in Beijing. The story reflects people's everyday life. The little things that may happen in a community have been put into this comedy of Hebei clapper opera.

Ji Junchao, screen writer, said, "I wanted to make it close to daily life. The people in this opera may seem like people who are living with you or your friends."

In the Mei Lan Fang Theatre, another Hebei clapper opera tells a historical tale And it features the performances of three Plum Blossom Award winners. Meanwhile, it is a newly created Hebei clapper opera, which may bring audiences a fresh new experience. For instance, it's the first time for the male role with painted face to take on the leading role.

Zhu Weiying, head of Chinese Theatre Music Society, said, "It is very surprising. It not only keeps the tradition of Hebei clapper opera, but also gives the best performance. The setting of the opera is also very nice!"

During this year's festival, audiences have the opportunity to appreciate a variety of operas such as Kunqu opera and Peking opera, fully illustrating the prosperity of China's traditional theatre arts.
