Ancient music of Yunnan keeps alive

Dongjing music is a type of Chinese ritual music traditionally performed by the Nakhi people in Huize county of southern China's Yunnan Province. Passed from the central plains area of China during the Ming and Qing Dynasty, the ancient musical form has become a well-known brand in the local culture as well as the tourism market.

Dongjing music of Yunnan Province differs according to where you are. For instance, Dongjing music in Lijiang embodies the culture of Nakhi minority and in Dali, it manifests the culture of the Bai minority. However, in Huize, it displays the Han culture and is named Tanglang Music.

Tian Yongguang, chief of Huize Dongjing Music Troupe, said, "Dongjing music in Huize is more about the Han culture. It's a kind of folk custom played for worship and rituals. Developed with the temple culture in Huize, the ancient music gradually includes music rhythms of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. Moreover, it also embodies a unique local charm. All of these features make it a special music system."

Huize Dongjing music orchestra always uses Chinese instruments such as the gong, muyu, pipa, guzheng and so on. In order to protect this ancient folk art from disappearing, the culture department of the local government has made great effort to save it. Senior artists of Dongjing music are registered, and their music performances are recorded as a precious legacy. The performing environment for the musicians has been improved to a great extent.

Tian Yongguang said, "In 2001, the local government supported us to establish Huize Dongjing Music Troupe. To maintain the Dongjing music heritage, a theatre and annual subsidy were granted to our music troupe."

In 2006, Huize Dongjing music was included in the protection list of the first batch of intangible cultural heritage in Yunnan Province. To bolster this precious traditional culture and let more people know about Tanglang ancient music, Huize Music Troupe has reached out to learn and perform.
