Christmas came early for children in one of Rio de Janeiro's largest shanty town areas in Brazil on Monday, as Santa Claus and volunteers from a local bank distributed thousands of gifts.

According to event organizers, more than 15-thousand presents were distributed to young people at the Alemao Complex. Volunteers handed out bags containing various items, including dolls and board games. The toys were collected from customers and employees of the Spanish-owned Santander bank group.

This is the second year the event has taken place, but the first time gifts have been handed out at the Alemao Complex, which is home to more than 65-thousand people.

It was taken over by military officers last November as part of a large operation to combat drug gangs that controlled the community.
