"Notre Dame de Paris" returns to Beijing stage

The musical "Notre Dame de Paris" has returned to Beijing after a decade. It's last performance here was back in 2000, and it returns this time in English. Beijing audiences were bewitched by the performance - which blends enchanting songs and high energy dance, our reporter Song Yaotian was in the audience to bring us this report.

The show captivated the audience from the beginning, when poet Gringorie - who narrates the story - belted out the opening tune "The Age of the Cathedrals".

The play brings modern flair to the classic Victor Hugo story about a deformed but kind-hearted hunchback bell-ringer Quasimodo and his love, Esmeralda the Gypsy.

Canadian singer Matt Laurent - who has portrayed Quasimodo both in English and Frech at over 400 performances, impressed audience with his hoarse, but emotional rendering of the songs.

Esmeralda is played by French Canadian Candice Parise - who charmed audiences with both her voice and her grace in dance.

And world-famous tenor Robert Marien plays the jealous priest Frollo, who covets Emeralda and leads her to destruction.

Beijing audience were blown away by the show.

An audience member said, "It's very original in terms of stage sets, lighting and performance. It breaths new life to a well known story. The story is told in a way that modern audiences can relate to."

An audience member said, "I knew the story from books and movies, so I thought it would be a classical style musical. But it added-in a lot of modern elements. It surpassed my expectations. One word to sum it up: stunning. "

"It's a stunning, audio visual feast," said an audience member.

Debuting in Paris in 1998, the musical met instant success. Since then, it has been translated into seven languages and been shown all over the world. More than 4.5 million people have seen the show, and its soundtrack has sold more than 7 million copies. An English version opened in 2000 - pushing the show to reach a wider audience.

There are 50 songs in the performance some of which, like "Belle", "Live for the One I Love" and "Dance My Esmeralda" have found success in music fans in their own right.

The musical toured Guangzhou and Shanghai before heading to Beijing. It will enjoy a 4-day run at the Beijing Exhibition Center Theater before ending Friday.
