"Theater in the Air" marks 9 years

CCTV's Opera Channel shows all kinds of traditional Chinese Operas, but one program mainly focuses on Peking Opera. Now, the program "Theater in the Air" is marking its ninth anniversary. They got the celebration started in grand style here in Beijing with famous performers staging 20 scenes from Peking opera.

Artists Li Weikang and Li Hongtu sang the classic piece Sha Jiabang, which has its background based on the history of China's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. Some programs were performed by students of Peking Opera.

The twice weekly program has aired some 800 shows during prime time, and is considered to have a positive influence on the development and preservation of Peking Opera.

The celebration performance will air locally at 7:20 PM on Saturday.
