Hundreds of Belgian chefs, food fans and passers-by set a new world record on Monday, by throwing their trademark white chef's hats into the air to mark the start of Brussels' year of gastronomy. This adds a new entry to the menu in the Guinness book of records.

Belgium is well-known for its mussels, waffles and hundreds of traditional beers. But Brussels' tourist office wants the city to be associated with haute cuisine too. So they organized the event to mark the start of "Brusselicious", a year to promote the European capital Brussels as a gastronomic destination.

Organizers said they set a new world record by gathering more than 600 chefs and passers-by to throw white chef's hats in the air. The new record will be added to next year's Guinness Book of World Records.

Chef Yves Mattagne, who owns the two-starred "Sea Grill" restaurant in Brussels, said Belgium gastronomy needed to be defended.

Yves Mattagne said, "We are here today to defend gastronomy in Brussels and throughout Belgium. Brussels is one step on the road to showing that gastronomy throughout Belgium is important. We have some products we want to show off. And it's not only gourmet food, it's the whole sector, cafes and so on... and even a nag of chips is delicious, with good Belgian fries, it's just fantastic."

Mattagne said every cook should understand traditional Belgium cooking, but that everyone should feel free to add products from abroad, like original spices that would give a new twist to traditional recipes. In his restaurant for example, he is offering a salty version of the traditional Belgian waffle. Instead of topping the waffle with icing sugar, he adds seaweed, candied lemon, lobsters or grey shrimps.

Chef Alain Deluc from restaurant "Barbizon" said gastronomy wouldn't mean anything without the Belgium's joie de vivre.

Alain Deluc said, "Mussels and French fries: this is our image in the whole world, but I think most people could be enticed by the quality of our food and our conviviality. The Belgians like to party, like to eat quality products and like to drink moderately. This is the secret. One has to come and see us in Belgium."

Other events scheduled for "Brusselicious" include thematic dinners, a chocolate fair and of course, a beer competition.
