After three years on the works, China's Commercial Press has released its Modern Academic Series. The 100-volume set is a collection of academic papers and books by Chinese people from both home and abroad over the past two centuries.

The collection is a summation of the country's modern original academic thoughts. The one hundred volume series includes articles from the late Qing Dynasty to the 1980s by writers from the Chinese mainland as well as from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

Mainly focusing on humanities and the social sciences, the volumes cover such topics as literature, history, philosophy as well as economy, politics and law. Apart from the 35 million words, there are also over one hundred pictures and copies of handwritten notes by prestigious writers.

But if you think these books belong only to an ivory tower, you may be surprised how accessible some of them are.

Wang Tao, sec. of Party Committee of China Publishing Group, said, "Actually many books are for common readers. At that time, writers wanted the knowledge to spread and popularize. So this series can be very enjoyable for today's readers."

To attract more overseas readers, five of the volumes have been translated into English.

The series became a project admitted by the General Administration of Publication and Press in 2009, and has been supported by the National Publishing Fund. Hundreds of experts were consulted before the final publishing.
