One of the most important examples of modernist architecture - the Villa Tugendhat by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe - is being lovingly restored at a cost of millions of dollars. The building is a world heritage site, declared by the UNESCO in 2001.

This eye-catching building was completed in 1930. Later, the Nazis seized it, and then came the bombings during World War II. When the Soviet troops liberated Czechoslovakia, the living space became a large stable. Now, a two-year renovation that cost nine-million US dollars is almost complete.

Czech officials are confident it will become one of the most popular tourism venues in the region. Some 80 percent of the villa's original features have been preserved.

Combining an original design of pure geometric forms with advanced technologies and exotic materials, the architect satisfied the owners' wish for innovation and originality.

A grand opening is scheduled for February 29th and the villa will be reopened to the public March 6th.
