The New York-based Joffrey Ballet School has held open auditions in the S.A.R. for its summer programs. The school, founded in 1953, often holds auditions in the United States and Europe, but this is the first time that auditions have taken place anywhere in Asia.

The Joffrey Ballet School offers a multidisciplinary approach to ballet. Graduates of the School have gone on to dance for major classical ballet companies, as well as for numerous modern and contemporary companies, both in the United States and abroad.

Prospective students were given a one and a half hour master class by Joffrey artistic director and former San Francisco principal dancer, and judged on technical ability, musicality and their perceived potential.

Alice Alyse, artistic director of Joffrey Ballet School, said, "There were some very talented students. I was very happy with the turn out. I think they really liked the class because it was something different. You know, it's the American way of instruction."

Alice Fletcher, a 17-year-old dance student at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, said auditions were tough and very different from her normal lesson style.

Alice Fletcher said, "It wasn't my best day today but I enjoyed the class and it was interesting to learn another style of ballet. I felt that it was very different to what I'm working at every day. But I enjoyed the class. It was hard and fast and a challenge, so it was good."

Though it is not known how large the uptake from the Hong Kong auditions will be, the applicants may be comforted to know that along with the intensive summer course for ballet, there will be separate jazz and contemporary programs available in New York, and other U.S. cities.
