Archaeologists in Egypt said on Monday, that they have begun the second phase of the delicate restoration of a 4,500-year-old wooden boat found next to the Great Pyramid of Giza.

The boat is believed to be built for the Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu, who also built the Pyramid of Giza, making it among the seven wonders of the world.

The Khufu Solar boat was discovered on the Giza Plateau in 1954, and is regarded as one of the site's most significant discoveries.

Samples have been taken to help archaeologists learn more about how best to restore the vessel, it will be put on display at the Solar Boat Museum near the huge pyramid where is was discovered.

Dr. Mustafa Amin of Egyptian Council for Antiquities, said, "The boat was found complete and intact, now we are trying to identify the different components and fungus in the wood by the samples obtained, to figure out how to isolate the fungus from the wood."

Experts say the ship buried near the Pyramid is one of the oldest surviving vessels from antiquity. They believe it to part of a religious custom symbolizing that the Pharaoh would be carried by the vessel in the eternal afterlife.

But people waiting to see the ship on display won't have to wait for an eternity, as the restoration is expected to take only a couple more years.
