To the Cologne carnival, the most celebrated of its kind in Europe. The main float parade kicked off last weekend with elaborate costumes and beautiful decorations. But what's different this year is, for the first time, a group of Chinese floats became part of the show.

Almost everybody's excited about the carnival this year, including this little fellow. And when Chinese performers and floats kick off the show, the excitement surged even more.

This is the first time the carnival has included guests from Asia in the float parade. From panda costumes and Chinese lantern girls to models wearing clothes of the major tourist attractions of Beijing, an ancient yet modern China is portrayed before everyone's eyes. The mayor of Cologne has been through lots of float parades in the past, but this he admits is something special.

For the first time, a group of Chinese floats became part of the show.

Jurgen Roters, Mayor of Cologne, said, "They look amazing, with color and decoration. This is a great start to our parade."

This year marks the anniversary of 40 years of diplomatic relations between China and Germany, and 25 years of friendly ties between Beijing and Cologne. So Cologne has named 2012 Cologne China year, which means its citizens can expect to see more Chinese elements throughout the remainder of the year.
