As you may have noticed, a team of Chinese acrobatics were invited and performed on the stage of the 84th Academy Awards Ceremony. Let's go behind the scenes and see how the Shandong Provincial Acrobatic Troupe paved their way to the Oscars.

For a western audience, it was a rare chance to see acrobatic skill and physical prowess at this level.

Nine performers from eastern China's Shandong Provincial Acrobatic Troupe presented Foot Juggling at the Kodak Theatre on February 26th, along with acrobats from Russia, France, Brazil and Ukraine.

Yao Jianguo, director of Shandong Provincial Acrobatic Troupe, said, "Foot Juggling is our specialty, and we are proud to be invited by the Academy Awards. The squad of nine-people will next team up with Cirque de Soleil for more worldwide tours."

Although it's the first time for a Chinese performing group to appear on the Oscar Stage, domestic acrobats have already made their marks on the global acrobatic scene. The Foot Juggling program won top honors at the 34th International Circus Festival of Monte Carlo in 2010, and it's only one of many productions from the Shandong Provincial Acrobatic Troupe. What makes this achievement more outstanding is that the Troupe only became a self-supporting limited liability company that promotes original programs since 2009.

Chen Peng, deputy director of Department of Culture, Shandong, said, "Performing at Oscars is a great boost to the troupe's global credit, and the rest of art troupes in Shandong are following the lead to improve international reputations with original performances. Hopefully the package of Shandong arts will be known by the world someday."

By building a virtuous cycle of writing, rehearsing and performing, the troupe takes authenticity as the key to face the competitive performance industry market. In the meantime, experienced members of the troupe are financially benefiting from thriving ticket sales, making this a win-win situation for both sides.
