Despite facing growing competition from modern media such as radio, TV and now the e-book, Zhonghua publishing company still stands out as a trusted guardian of China's ancient classics.

Zhonghua Book Company began focusing on ancient philosophical texts and literary classics in 1958.

Some of the company's signature works include "A Collection of 24 Historical Records from 2500 B.C to 1640" and "A Draft History of the Qing Dynasty".

The two huge projects took 20 years to complete, backed by the government and a joint effort by over a hundred historical experts. The publications are highly regarded within the publishing world.

Li Yan, the general manager of Zhonghua Book Company, said," Zhonghua Book Company was a comprehensive publishing house in its early stages. But since 1958, the central government clarified our role as a publisher of ancient classics. It's proved to have been a good decision, and has been the root of our company. "

But the company has suffered some setbacks. The 1990s saw Zhonghua under intense pressure, as profits fell, after the company diversified its range of books.

The experience pulled the publisher back to its original focus on ancient classics and academic texts.

In 2007, the company once again hit its winning formula, with "A Historical Record of the 12 Emperors of Qing Dynasty".

By the end of February, the title had enjoyed record sales of over 500 thousand volumes.

Zhonghua Book Company says it will continue to catalogue and preserve China's traditional culture, passing on a historical legacy for generations to come.
