Russian Fashion Week opened in Moscow on Wednesday, with a celebration of one of the country's most renowned designers, Slava Zaitsev. The veteran 74-year-old has been in the business for half a century and his fashion house is still going strong. But are his designs still able to hold their own against younger brands?

Day one of Russia's fashion week and legendary Slava Zaitsev is celebrating his 50th year of turning out eye catching designs.

The 5 day festival opened with his new collection, simply called "Associations". Despite a mix of periodical references, Zaitsev insists the collection is wholly contemporary.

He said, "A lot of these designs could be worn in everyday life. I've been in fashion for 50 years and I’m not interested in surprising anyone, I just want to make good clothes for people and that's it."

Zaitsev's unusual hat designs have gained the most attention, once again surprising his admirers.

One former model called Tatyana Mikhalkova said, "He is a firework, a burst, a volcano. He is like Russia - very different, bright and beautiful."

Russian Fashion Week has been held twice a year since 2001, and is the biggest fashion event in Eastern Europe. The showcase event for autumn/winter collections of Russia's top designers runs until Sunday.
