Pingle Village, located in Luoyang of central China's Henan province, is famous for its peony paintings. In Chinese art, Peonies are regarded as symbols of wealth and happiness. Right now, Pingle folk artists and farmers are busy working on an exhibition for the coming Luoyang peony festival. CCTV's reporter Liu Li visited the village to discover more.

Guo Xiaowei is one of Pingle's prestigious artists. He has been painting peonies for more than 20 years. His art communicates the beauty, elegance and fortune tied-up in the flowers.

Guo Xiaowei said, "We are fond of peonies. That's why we like painting and selling the paintings."

A customer said, "We buy Mr Guo's peony paintings every year as gifts for business partners."

Guo Xifan's painting style is driven by bold strokes and strong colors. And though he is also a talented calligrapher, his passion lies in painting the flowers.

Folk artists started the tradition in Pingle in the 1980s. Guo Taisen's elder brother was a pioneer in the art. And he himself has never stopped painting and teaching.

Guo Taisen said, "It helps farmers not only develop their appreciation for the arts, but also bring in money."

More than 1200 Pingle residents are involved in the trade. People of all ages attend painting classes. And. The artists also organize a variety of events including workshops and exhibitions. Local students even receive free peony painting lessons from primary schools.

CCTV's Liu Li said, "These folk artists are now busy working at the painting exhibition. This exhibit provides a good platform for rural artists in China to share their works and learn from each other. And they hope to spread this unique art form to more people."
