Renowned British dance choreographer Akram Khan brought his latest production "Vertical Road" to Beijing over the weekend. Brimming with stunning moves, music, and emotion, the contemporary dance piece proves to uphold Akram’s international reputation once again.

Man's earthly nature, rituals and consequences of human actions, path from gravity to grace.

This is "Vertical Road", Akram Khan Company's latest modern dance ensemble work.

Khan drew inspiration for the piece from a poem written by Rumi, a famous Persian poet and philosopher from the 13th Century. The performance examines the interaction between different cultures and dance innovation, featuring elements such as lighting and music.

Farooq Chaudhry, producer, said, "Vertical Road really means the journey between earth and heaven. It’s a spiritual journey for us. Originally we were inspired by the notion of angels of different cultures. In the work itself there are dancers from all over the world. We wanted to have a Chinese angel, an Indian angel, an Arab angel."

Known for his lightning speed movement and meticulous muscle precision, Khan's style of dance has become a trademark in the contemporary dance world. He started to train in the art of Kathak when he was a young boy, and later studied contemporary dance. It was from the combination of both these disciplines that formed his unique style of dance.

An important characteristic of the Akram Khan Company is its cultural diversity, a trait which makes the dance troupe universally relatable.

Farooq Chaudhry, producer, said, "Our company, we've always had this reputation for being culturally diverse. For years we’ve had dancers from lots of different countries. And I think what you get when you have a culturally diverse company, is that you get lots of interpretations of a single story. It makes it feel richer, more interesting, not so familiar."

In fact, expanding into the Chinese market has been a key endeavor for the dance company. Vertical Road held its Asian premiere in Guangzhou last year, and is part of the UK NOW program, one of the biggest ever celebrations of British art held in China.

Khan will be one of the collaborators for the upcoming London Olympics opening ceremony. Vertical Road runs May 12-13 at the National Center for Performing Arts in Beijing.
