The 11th Havana Biennial art show has kicked off in Cuba, bringing together artists from 40 countries, including overseas Cubans. Exhibits range from traditional art pieces to electronic devices. It's a feast of diverse cultures.

Installations, sculptures, photographs and theatre performances by Cuban and foreign artists take over the streets, galleries and museums in Havana. The event gathers 180 artists from 40 different countries, including Austria, Serbia, the United States, Brazil and Mexico.

Started in 1984 as a tribute to the 25th anniversary of the Cuban revolution, the Havana Biennial Art Show offers a display window, showcasing Cuban local culture, European colonial culture, African culture as well as Indian culture. This is the first time Cuban artists living outside the country have shown works in Havana in over 50 years.

Ella, Fontanals-Cisneros Art Foundation, said "Being the first time something like this has been done in Cuba in 50 years, I think we are setting a precedent for something new, a new era in Cuba."

All the cultural facilities and public spaces in the city are being used for the exhibition, ranging from traditional oil paintings and sculptures to high-tech devices. And all is free for visitors.

Residents in Havana say the art around the city gives things a different tone.

Eugenio Corujo, Havana resident, said "These artworks make things different. They give the city a different tone and change it,"

The show runs until June 11.
