The world's longest running soap opera has been transformed into an all-singing, all-dancing musical. British TV drama, "Coronation Street" is the latest show to get a musical makeover, combining high kicks, high notes and big numbers with the drama's most iconic moments.

Stars past and present of beloved soap opera "Coronation Street" are joined by a West-End chorus on stage in Manchester. The show crams comic and dramatic moments from the last five decades into one spectacular performance.

Kevin Kennedy, who played the much loved character Curly Watts, is thrilled to be part of the stage show.

Kevin Kennedy, actor, said, "This is like looking back with fondness and you will be sat out there and you will think I remember this and then I remember that and I remember this bit, its like a pick of the best bits of the last fifty years."

"Coronation Street" has become a must-see in many British homes since it started in 1961 and its characters inhabit millions of front rooms around the country up to five times a week.

Some of the most successful shows on the British stage at the moment are also familiar stories with familiar characters including "Shrek," "Billy Elliot," "Dirty Dancing" and "Legally Blonde."

Some critics point out that while they might be popular; such shows struggle to offer a culturally challenging experience.

Mark Shenton, theatre critic, said, "Sometimes it's helpful to have something to hook onto like an existing property they know and love, but this does strike one as a little bit limp and lazy to do so constantly."

Nevertheless, the actors are excited about opening night.

Richard Hillman, actor, said, "I think the buzz around this, is its kind of different and also it's a first and the main thing about it is it adds to the show, this is what I never realized."

After opening in Manchester Arena on May 9 and 10, 2012, the show tours to Dublin, Belfast and Newcastle, with two shows in each city.
