Audience members at Saturday's Shanghai Grand Theater got to see a symphony of birds. The Shanghai National Orchestra, led by music maestro Tan Dun, stunned the audience with their performance featuring the music of 12 live birds.

The sound of nature, Tan Dun's "Music of Birds" symphony shows the Chinese way of understanding the relationship between man and nature.

Tan Dun, musician, said, "It is an expression of the heart. I have an invitation for all of you. When the performance is drawing to its end, I will let you hear the music of birds coming from inside your heart."

The performance was like a conversation between man and bird. It was accompanied by the improvised performance of singer Dadawa and her 12 little winged partners.

Then all the traditional Chinese musical instruments entered the symphony. And Tan Dun turned to the audience, inviting them to join the chorus. After a joyful climax, the performance ended in silence.

Huang Doudou, dancer, said, "The music inspires me to think a lot, not only about the music itself, but also about life and the relationship between man and nature."

Cello soloist.

Hu Xuehua, film director, said, "It really touched me when the music came on and the birds started to sing. It was so special. Thanks to Tan Dun for surprising us again. It was great."

The half-hour show "Music of Birds" had its debut in Hong Kong back in 2005. It seems that seven years on it has not failed to impress its audience.
