Rare, unseen photos of legend Beatles unveiled

A New York art gallery is exhibiting rare, unseen photographs of British legends The Beatles at the beginning of their career. The photos were captured during the band’s first and second American tours.

The collection of roughly 30 photos went on display at New York’s Morrison Hotel Gallery on Thursday. These photos were taken by famed photographers Curt Gunther and Robert Whitaker.

Peter Blachley, Morrison Hotel Gallery Owner, said, "What’s special about this exhibit is again, it’s the Beatles in their formative years, when they were transitioning from a touring band into becoming a recording band - probably from meet the Beatles all the way up through ’Rubber Sole’ and ’Revolver.’"

When the fab-four made their U.S. Debut in 1964, Gunther was the only photographer to capture the band both on and off stage.

Steve Gunther, Son of Curt Gunther, said, "He became friends with the Beatles when he was in Europe and they told him they were coming to America and they invited him to come along - I think he kind of begged a little bit too."

This photo is especially significant.

"This is a very historic photo because it’s when the band, the Beatles first appeared on the Ed Sullivan show and it was a very historical evening, everybody remembers it and this is them performing." Steve Gunther said.

During the Beatles second U.S. invasion, Whitaker was assigned the task of photographing the stars. Over the course of two years he photographed many intimate moments, which include Lennon and McCartney working on lyrics and the band hanging out backstage.

The "Unseen Beatles" exhibit opens to the public on June 15.
