At Sotheby’s auction house in London, Joan Miro’s painting "Peinture", was sold to an anonymous buyer on Tuesday, for a whopping 36.9 million US dollars.

The 1927 work is one in the series of "dream paintings". It is arguably one of the most important works by Miro ever to come to the market. Sotheby’s describes it as a masterpiece of modern art which has come to the market at a time when demand for iconic works of this period is at an all-time high.

Interestingly, it broke Miro’s personal price record, selling for nearly three times the price of what it sold for at an auction in 2007. Sotheby’s total sales for the night was over 110 million US dollars. Its contemporary sale will take place next Tuesday and Wednesday.
