Many may still remember the animated version of the master painting "Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival" by great artist Zhang Zeduan from the Song Dynasty. But now artists in Kaifeng, in Central China’s Henan Province, are offering us a new perspective to appreciate this masterpiece. Inspired by the original, they have made a wooden replica of the entire painting.

The material used is a giant tree root, weighing in at 13.6 tons. The root comes from a rosewood tree grown in Southeast Asia. The diameter of the trunk measures four meters and its root reaches a total length of six meters. It took 16 artists two years to finish the wooden sculpture. The root carving features 314 figures with various facial expressions and gestures.

It reveals the lifestyle of all levels of society as well as different activities being carried out in the bustling urban centers and rural areas of the Song Dynasty. Visitors can find countless street vendors, barges with passengers, as well as dense rows of shops, all of which amply demonstrate the prosperity of Bianjing, today’s Kaifeng, during the Qingming Festival hundreds of years ago.
