Documentary details the search for Sixto Rodriguez by two South African fans who are looking for their long lost musical icon, whose signature song "Sugar Man" has made him a household name.

"Searching for Sugar Man" introduces the masses to the true story of the U.S. folk-rocker whose music tanked stateside in the 1970’s but became a massive sensation in South Africa - all unbeknownst to him.

Malik Bendjelloul, director, said, "It was made an album in the 70’s, which was a masterpiece, it was absolutely fantastic, and it sells nothing in America, literally nothing. Like, six copies, I mean, nothing, nothing. And he makes another attempt, another album, and the same result. And then he, you know, what do you do? He stops making music, he starts to work in construction, and never learns that one of those albums gets to South Africa and in South Africa Rodriguez becomes more famous than The Rolling Stones. He sells ten times platinum, becomes one of the most famous artists ever, and he doesn’t know about this."

Many people in South Africa actually believed Rodriguez had committed suicide. Two fans in South Africa decided to investigate whether the rumor was true and if not- to find out what happened to their favorite rock singer. This is how the idea for the film came about.

As for Rodriguez, now 69-years-old, he has hope for the future due to new interest in his music from the film.

Sixto Rodriguez, recording artist, said, "Well a musician always plays. I do covers. I practice a lot, I rehearse a lot, I meet other musicians and we talk music and make plans for the future. I’m, this is separate from the film itself, I practice music, but with the film we’re getting a lot more attention and it’s exciting, my music career."

Already the winner of the World Cinema Special Jury Prize and the Audience Award, World Cinema Documentary at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, "Searching for Sugar Man" will hit UK cinemas on July 27th.
