The Contemporary Chinese Dictionary remains the most authoritative and the most popular account of the modern Chinese language. 34 years since its publication, it’s been hailed variously as the "fifth treasure of the study", "the teacher’s teacher" and "the dictionary of dictionaries".
It keeps reinventing itself to evolve and move forward with the times. Between 1978 and now, there have been 5 revisions. The first changes were made in the 1980s, with the aim of erasing the influences of the Cultural Revolution. In mid-1990s, the number of entries increased to 61-thousand, and featured words using the English alphabet for the first time. In 2005, the total number of entries increased again to 65,000.
And the latest update, taking the classic tome into its 6th edition, has just been completed, and it’s the biggest ever, with 69,000 entries, 13,000 of which are single character words.
