July 17th was the anniversary of the death of Nie Er, the composer of the national anthem of the People’s Republic of China. And it’s a double celebration, as 2012 is also the 100th anniversary of Nie Er’s birth. All week, people in his home town in Yunnan Province are paying tribute to the man known as "The People’s Musician".

It’s a tune that’s inspired generations of the Chinese people. "The March of the Volunteers" was chosen as the national anthem after New China was founded in 1949. It had already become an anthem for Chinese people everywhere, throughout the previous decades of turmoil.

Nie Er died aged only 23. His short but great life is being remembered by the people of his home town of Yuxi city in Southwest China’s Yunnan Province. Young people are keen to take part in the celebration.

A student said, "His music really united the Chinese people. It’s very inspiring and I’m proud of him."

Nie Er, "The People’s Musician"

In the Yuxi museum, over 300 of Nie Er’s belongings are on display for the first time. They include musical instruments, manuscripts, and correspondence, each and every one of them telling their own story.

A tour guide said, "We hope to show a new Nie Er to the public. The stories behind the objects on display are very touching. This one, for example, he made 100 dollars in Kunming and sent half the money to his mother, and bought a violin with the rest of the money. He was a good son. "

Nie Er died on July 17th, 1935. The facts of his death aren’t fully clear, but it’s thought he drowned while swimming in Japan. He wrote a total of 41 compositions in his short life, all in the two years before his death.

A significant proportion of these songs reflect working class life and struggles, including "Song of the Big Road" and "Dock Workers’ Song" etc. It’s songs like these that earned him the name "the people’s musician".
