The Olympics isn’t just about fierce competition and athletic achievement, it’s also about cultural exchange. A 12-year-old Chinese singer Doudou has held a concert in East London to celebrate the Games.

Her performance at London’s Hackney Empire Theatre was aimed at creating a kind of cultural communication between the youth of China and Britain.

12-year-old Doudou opened the "China to Hackney Festival" at the Hackney Empire. Along with the old classics, "Descendants of the Dragon" and "Invisible Wings", she also performed her new song "Blue Sail." The little star said she was excited to hold her first concert in the British capital.

Doudou said, "This time I’ve chosen August 8th in Chinese Culture Week, which happens to be the same date as the 2008 Beijing Olympics opening ceremony. I’m really happy to be holding a concert during the Olympics, because I am representing China."

DouDou first came to fame in China as the voice behind the children’s version of the 2008 Beijing Olympics theme song "You and Me". She’s been invited by the International Olympic Committee officials to stage a concert in London during the Olympics to "inspire" the younger generation and promote cultural exchanges between China and Britain.

Doudou continued, "I think the 2008 Beijing Olympics presented Chinese culture, and London has its quirky and beautiful elements. I think the two are very different and I like them both."

The singer was joined on stage by 18-year-old Aidan Reynolds, a young athlete who lit the Olympic flame in the opening ceremony last month.

Hackney, where DouDou’s concert was held, enjoyed a massive cultural revamp in the lead up to the Games, partly due to its proximity to the Olympic park. The China to Hackney Festival is set to run through to this Sunday.
