All the way from south west China’s Yunnan Province, the Dai ethnic minority are gracing theatres across Beijing with their lively stage performances celebrating the beauty of water.

For the Dai people, water is revered as a holy and auspicious element and the stage productions reflect this through a fascinating fusion of traditional dance and modern lighting and sound technology.

Audiences are transported to the tropical rainforests of southern Yunnan, where a harmony exists between the Dai people and their natural environment. The Dai are well-known for their peacock dancing and this is a major highlight of the show.

Yang Hongan, Xishuangbanna Ethnic Dance Troupe, said, "We have thirty people doing the peacock dance to the beat of drums, and it’s a very dynamic piece."

The event is part of a Cultural Ministry initiative to bring more quality performances to Beijing. The performances will run until October.
