"Reluctant Fundamentalist" opens Venice

The 69th Venice Film Festival has opened with the premiere of "The Reluctant Fundamentalist" directed by Indian director, and Venice-regular, Mira Nair. Stars from the political thriller ensured the Film Festival got off to a glamorous start. Here’s more from the red carpet!

Hollywood star Kate Hudson sparkled on the red carpet ahead of her film’s screening, accompanied by her musician fiance Matthew Bellamy, frontman of English rock band Muse.

Fellow actress Naomi Watts stood by her actor partner Liev Schreiber, who also stars in "The Reluctant Fundamentalist".

Meanwhile director Mira Nair looked radiant, alongside her film’s main star, Riz Ahmed.

"The Reluctant Fundamentlist" is based on Mohsin Hamid’s 2007 novel. The political thriller tells the tale of youngster Changez - a Pakistani man working on Wall Street, who falls for the American, Erica. As his life in the States progresses, the youngster is torn between his career and his loyalty to his home country.

"The Reluctant Fundamentalist" is not part of the competition, but there are 18 films competing for the top prize, The Golden Lion. Headed by acclaimed director of "Heat" and "Collateral", Michael Mann, the judges were out in force to mark the start of the annual event.

Michael Mann, Jury President said, "On behalf of all of us I want to thank you for the honor of being invited to participate as jurors at this revered and historical, and at the same time very new and exciting Venice Film Festival, thank you very much."

Now celebrating its 80th anniversary, the Venice film festival is the world’s oldest film festival. Its 69th edition runs until September the 8th.
