The people of Zhujing Town of Shanghai have been making lanterns for over a thousand years. The town is now hosting its first international handmade lantern festival. There, visitors can enjoy a veritable sea of lanterns of all shapes, sizes and colors.

A traditional local dance opens the event. Of course, the backdrop is quite fitting for the occasion, thousands of Chinese lanterns lighting up the night sky in a magical tableau. And within this, a whole host of new designs draw the eyeballs of the hordes of visitors.

While this is the town’s first such festival looking to the international community, the tradition has been ongoing in some form for quite some time. The history stretches all the way back to the Tang Dynasty, more than a millennium past. Around this time each year, villages from the area bring teams of performers to display their lanterns - with the events lasting till the early morning of the second day.

There’s good cause for the celebrations. It’s said that the lanterns bring happiness, and the dances good luck. This year’s festival runs to next Sunday.
