10-26-2012 20:49 BJT

This week, Danish musicians and singers have been celebrating Danish compositions with a series of concerts across the small Scandinavian country.

One singing coach, Pia Scharling has got what some might see as a mission impossible. Mrs. Scharling says she can cure people normally regarded as tone deaf and to prove her point she prepared ten supposedly bad singers into a choir. And they performed this week in a show called Songs from the Shower.

Welcome to the music clinic of Pia Scharling.

“Anyone can learn to sing. I can give a person the trust in themselves that they will be able to learn to sing. My pupils become so happy you can’t imagine. It is a kind of happiness that fills you when you discover you can sing. You are (a) musical person. It has for many of my pupils been a dream that they have had since childhood. It gives them so much confidence.”

Pia Scharling, Singing coach, said, “You cannot imagine how much it means for a person who has been thinking for maybe many many years that they were not able to sing.”

Tue Kjaer, former tone deaf signer, said, “One of the things that I think is wonderful about singing is that you get in contact with yourself, your emotions in another way. I feel very happy when I sing. I get in contact with a lot of me.”

“And I guess this song is very much about me, about love, enjoying take me to the moon.”

It has taken just four short teaching sessions to get ten tone deaf people into shape for the concert.

Pia, the teacher says it only takes a few minutes to determine whether someone can sing or not. And she claims to have one hundred percent success. And only once in thirty years has she come across somebody who was a totally hopeless case.

And so to the Shower Singers’ first public appearance.

“In common they had an insecurity that meant they would never sing when other people are present, which means they have been very, very brave to come here.”

According to their teacher, overcoming nerves and performing in front of an audience has been a major step towards becoming better singers and more self confident human beings as well.
