Halloween is the time when ghosts and ghouls traditionally stalk the night shadows - and one house in Maryland is more haunted than most. Beware, those who are faint of heart, this report contains some gruesome scenes.

Zombies are on the loose across the US.

Located in an abandoned office building above a Maryland strip mall, Warehouse Project 4.1 is the Washington DC metro area’s newest addition to the haunted house scene.

And it’s quickly becoming a mecca for local daredevils.

Justin Watson, co-founder of Warehouse Project 4.1, said,"We’ve created more of an actor-driven haunted house. We haven’t used a lot of pre-fabricated props. As a result, when you’re dealing with real people, there is more margin to act differently rather than something popping out of the wall at you. Our actors have a mind of their own - or maybe not, because they’re zombies!

But this company wasn’t just set up to provide a thrill at halloween.

According to the Haunted House Association - an umbrella organisation for most haunted attractions around the US - the American haunted house industry nets close to 300 million US dollars annually. If done right, these companies can even make a profit within the first season.

The Warehouse project was formed by four friends and employs over a hundred paid actors, make-up artists and acting coaches.

Kyle Keggers, zombie actor, said,"You get used to it after a while. For a while, you forget you have something on your face and you go to scratch it and you’re like ’ugh’"

The maze is veiled in darkness, with actors hiding in little nooks, just waiting to pop out and chase the guests down bloodied corridors.

Richard Setton, zombie actor, said,"When we start up and people are coming in, it’s the best feeling to scare people and pop up behind them. There are a lot of people coming through who are like ’oh I’m not scared of this’ and when you hear them say that and you can get them, it really makes you enjoy the rest of the night."

A customer said,"It was fantastic. It scared even a 26-year-old like me, but it was so much fun."

But, safety is always a number one concern in the haunted house business.

A security guard sits in a back room and keeps an eye on things in coordination with other security guards positioned around the maze, to make sure the fear factor doesn’t get out of hand.

The actor is making up.
