The International Ballet Festival of Havana has got under way in Cuba. Chaired by China’s dear old friend, legendary ballerina Alicia Alonso, the festival has brought together dancers, choreographers and stage directors from twenty-one countries.

The 23rd grand gala, which takes place every two years, was opened by famed Cuban ballerina Alicia Alonso.

Alonso, who turns 92 in December, has been instrumental in building Cuban ballet’s formidable reputation.

Alicia Alonso, Cuban ballerina, said,"For me it’s just wonderful and I feel very proud to say we are celebrating a great ballet festival in Cuba."

The opening performance at Havana’s National Theatre was attended by a number of government figures including Miguel Diaz Canel, Vice President of the Cuban Council of Ministers.

One of the most eagerly awaited performances at the event will be the American Tom Gold Dance company with members of the New York City Ballet.

There will also be members of the English National Ballet and the Northern Ballet from the United Kingdom, members of the Opera Ballet of Dresden, and the National Ballet of Holland.

Festival organizers have announced eight world premiers and at least 37 works to be seen on the island for the first time ever.

This year’s festival runs until November 7.
