Video: French glass art exhibit in Shanghai

11-01-2012 21:54 BJT

In Shanghai, the state owned Shanghai Museum is teaming up with the private run Liuli China Museum, for a special event. The two will showcase a collection of contemporary glass works that features some of the finest artists in France.

A show featuring 30 French classics.

Many were produced in the 19th century, a time when France revived the technique of wax casting, which dates back to ancient Egypt.

It became the catalyst for contemporary French glass art. And now, Chinese visitors have a chance to see it up close.

Chen Xiejun, curator of Shanghai Museum, said,"This joint exhibition gives us a good opportunity to let more people appreciate our collection."

Liuli China is also home to some of China’s oldest glass artefacts and contemporary glass from across the world.

Since 2011, it’s had a lot of support from China’s Administration of Cultural Heritage.

Yang Huishan, founder of Liuli China Museum, said,"The exchange and support are necessary. I hope we can better promote Chinese art and culture with the help of the government."

Just twenty years ago, "Liuli," was an archaic Chinese word. Now, it’s been brought back into modern China, to describe what we know as "glass art".
