238 pictures by the late American fashion and celebrity photographer Milton H. Greene went up for sale at the Desa Unicum auction house. Most of them depicted actress Marilyn Monroe.

The majority of the pictures were taken from 1953 to 1957, when Greene was Monroe’s advisor and business partner. His prints - he many quite a number of them throughout the actresses career - are now highly valued by collectors.

As the bidding began, a black-and-white photo of a reclining Monroe in black stockings sold for 16,000 US dollars, and another of her in a ballerina’s dress sold for almost 20,000.

Auctioneer Juliusz Windorbski said Greene’s photos were special because Monroe felt comfortable in front of his camera.

Windorbski said, "She was very natural, she was herself. There was nothing artificial and this is why these photos are so exceptional. The other thing is that Milton Green was a great photographer. He had this gift of catching these fleeting moments which made his photographs so special."

The auction also offered Greene’s pictures of other stars, including Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Marlene Dietrich and Liza Minnelli.

The auction house said in a statement that 734-thousand US dollars obtained made it the nation’s biggest photo auction to date.
