Video:Performance features Mozart's piano

11-11-2012 19:19 BJT

A concert was performed earlier this week on a fortepiano that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart played almost every day for nearly a decade. Russian pianist Alexander Melnikov had the honor to play the instrument before a small audience in Mozart’s house in downtown Vienna, where the piano has temporarily returned for the first time in 200 years.

The piano was made by Anton Walter - the leading instrument maker in Mozart’s time. It was purchased by Mozart after moving to Vienna in 1781, and went on to accompany his creative life until he died in 1791.

The Mozarteum Foundation Director said Mozart used his piano not only for practising but as his concert instrument. After Mozart’s death, the piano stayed with his family and even travelled to Milan in northern Italy where his son lived.

The piano will now travel westwards back to the Mozart Museum in Salzburg, where it is part of the permanent exhibition.
