Sylvie Guillem is a big name for dance fance. She is known as one of the greatest, if not the best, ballet dancer alive. The famous French ballerina recently debuted at the National Center for The Performing Arts with her daring contemporary routines.

The program was comprised of three pieces from some of the world’s most lauded choreographers.

Two dancers from Holland got things going with a piece interpreting the relationship between man and woman. Later Sylvie Guillem took to the stage with her partner for a duet playing with shapes and rhythm - the star’s skills showing in graceful turns and twirls.

Later on, she performed a piece developed specifically for her by star choreographer Mats Ek. It tells of a woman’s past, present and future - a highly emotional, passionate routine.

By 19, Guillem had already become the top ballerina at the Paris Opera Ballet. By 25 she had left Paris to become a principle guest artist with the Royal Ballet in London - soaking-in that city’s traditions. Today, she performs contemporary dance as an Associate Artist at Sadler’s Wells Theater. Even at 47, she has shown little sign of slowing down.

Some of her die-hard fans travelled all the way from Taiwan to see her perform.

Audience said, “I think Sylvie is the best female dancer in the world. I watched her performance in Hong Kong several years ago. That time she danced Sacred Monsters as part of her repertoire. This time she presented another two master choreographers’ works. I think it was great. I think her body is very natural when moves, and she dances very smoothly. This was a very good show.”

The NCPA’s dance festival - which includes 13 programs from around the world - will last until the end of the month. Coming attractions include Sylvie Guillem’s ballet piece La Traviata, and works from US based Chinese choreographer Shen Wei.
