In Morocco, music-lovers have gathered to celebrate the life of a renowned musician on the first anniversary of his death. Last week, an evening of song and music was dedicated to Salah Cherki, the master of the qanun which is a middle eastern string instrument.

To start off the event, Salah Cherki’s granddaughter Faten gave an impressive performance on the traditional string instrument that he was so well-known for.

But fears that the qanun is fast disappearing from orchestras around the world have prompted the birth of a new association bearing Cherki’s name.

The organization has been set up to encourage young musicians to learn how to play the qanun.

Son of Salah Cherki Mohamed Anwar Cherki said, "We founded this association for the benefit of the new generations so that they can get to know about qanun instrument. It is a difficult and expensive instrument and it is our duty to make it popular among young people. We will go to music schools to find the best players to encourage them."

Cherki died on 21 November 2011 at the age of 89.

During his lifetime, he set up several bands, including the Moroccan Radio Orchestra, which still performs today.

As well as being a celebrated musician and composer, Cherki was also an expert in classical, folk and modern Moroccan music.
