Century of Indian film fashion honored

Indian cinema is celebrating its 100 year anniversary. And to honor this milestone, one of the country's top fashion designers has paid tribute to its prolific Bollywood film industry, with a star-studded evening on the catwalk.

It was Bollywood on the catwalk at the Lakme India Fashion Week. Fashion designer to Bollywood stars Manish Malhotra, showcased the fashion trends in Bollywood from 1913 to 2013.

Ace directors Karan Johar, Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar and Dibakar Banerjee opened the stylish event dressed in black. Many top Indian filmmakers attended the show and it turned out to be extra special when veteran playback singer Asha Bhosle was called up on the ramp.

Asha Bhosle, Bollywood Singer, said,

"I am very proud that I am part of this film industry and people of this industry are very good as they support each other. I consider myself to be very lucky."

Regular Indian outfits such as embroidered saris, kurtas and sherwanis in sober black and white stood for the pioneering 30s. For the 60s it was the form fitted kurta in glitzy fabrics and textures. Stunnning bell bottoms and saris were the rage in the 70s. Colorful floral patterns and hippie styles ruled the 80s. When it came to the 90s, pastels and chiffons were standard.

Actress Priyanka Chopra ended the show in a pop green sari and also spoke at the event.

Priyanka Chopra, Bollywood Actress, said, "It’s not just a slice of life."

Manish Malhotra is the favorite designer for many of Bollywood’s leading actresses. He is well-known for his different styles and widely credited with revolutionizing a character’s on screen look in Bollywood.
