Vladmir Malakhov, the artistic director of the Berlin State Ballet, has brought the company on its maiden voyage to China. Their tenure at Beijing’s National Centre for the Performing Arts kicked off with a gala performance on Wednesday night. Culture Express’ Julian Waghann sat down with Malakhov to talk about his innovative company.

Malakhov started his ballet training at the age of four and was subsequently a student at Moscow’s prestigious Bolshoi Ballet. Under the tutelage of Peter Pestov, he went on to dance with numerous major ballet companies around the world.

Despite taking on the role of Artistic Director in 2004 for the Berlin State Ballet, Malakhov remains an integral role as a performer in the company.

As artistic director, Malakhov is also keen to foster a healthy family relationship in the company. Of the 10 principal dancers coming to China, there are three married couples. These remarkable bonds behind the scenes certainly translate onto the stage. The Berlin State Ballet is a family that continues to grow.

For his first visit to China, 45-year-old Malakhov has already made plans to visit the Great Wall, try acupuncture, and taste Peking Duck while he's in Beijing.

The company will be performing a mixed program on June 5 and 6 and an original ballet, La Peri, on June 8 and 9 at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing.
